Counselling:

Each counselling session is built around the needs for the individual, couple, or group. Judy focus’s the sessions around conscious and unconscious patterns. That is sometimes it is our thinking, behavior, beliefs, or unresolved issues that creep in the way of us really realizing who we are. These patterns of thoughts, beliefs, or unresolved issues create the dysfunction in our lives and often brings chaos to our existence Whether these patterns are more on the external fringes of our lives or buried deep within the thread of our existence they still impact our ability to achieve wholeness and wellness. There is much research on the impacts of unresolved issues and emotions that create stress and often are attributed to physical health issues that a person develops. Resolving these issues helps people to achieve a sense of peace and wellbeing.

Judy utilizes a wide range of techniques and processes to work with both the conscious and unconscious mind. Judy attempts to blend techniques that will suit each individual’s need. Judy does not use any techniques that she has not been thoroughly trained in. With each person after the initial intake session, where the client will outline, in whatever manner that they can, what some of their background is and what is the purpose or reason that they are seeking counselling. Each person will be asked to set goals or goals for their counselling sessions. As the counselling process moves along these goals will be reviewed. As with any process Judy asks people to be patient with themselves as change takes time.

In the first session each person, couple, or group will be given the parameters of counselling. These parameters include what is expected of them, the counsellor, explanation of their rights, such as confidentiality, durations of sessions, ethical considerations, methods and amount of payment, explanation of processes utilized within the counselling session, their rights as a client, what can be expected in a counselling session, and the signing of a consent form to retain the services of a counsellor. This ensures each person has some comfort with often a very unfamiliar process. Judy encourages people to ask questions, express concerns, and celebrate accomplishments as they move through the counselling process.

Often when people come into counselling they are in pain and want the pain to go away. Judy encourages people to accept and face the pain and to dig into their lives to discover the roots of these pains. First developing the awareness of where the pain came from or at least how we, as people, keep the pain pattern tied to ourselves, is essential. Then with the assistance of the counsellor each individual is assisted to move through processes that will help that person heal from these painful experiences.

Clients are asked to participate in homework assignments in order that awareness and learning may strengthen outside the counselling session. Judy is adamant that the client learn to stand on their own two feet, but also realizes at first we need someone to “walk along side us” in order that we may develop this strength. That is where the counselling sessions are helpful. Within each session Judy drives deep with each person to help them face their inner selves. At times this may seem painful, but the real pain is continuing to carry unresolved issues within ourselves. Each one of us must face our inner shadows and learn to embrace, rather than make wrong, those parts of us that have been isolated. Patterns develop out of the need to cope and often these are developed at times in our lives that have passed. Yet we continue to carry the pattern. When a person opens honestly in counselling this starts the process that lets that person out of the inner prisons which they have developed.

Sessions may be booked by calling Gateways Counselling phone number. At present Judy does not offer on-line or phone sessions.

Fees for counselling are $95.24 per hour plus GST for individuals.

Mediation Services:

Conflict of any type is often very difficult for any person. Most of us would like to avoid it, have it go away, or just have things go smoothly. Unfortunately life is not like that. Nature requires a struggle to be born, and often a struggle to survive; survival of the fittest is often the unwritten rule for the animal kingdom. For humans struggle, challenge, and what is termed healthy stress is often deemed important for humans to develop. Learning to walk, talk, and develop any skill does not simply happen. These things are developed with effort, energy, and practice.

So why is it that we humans think that conflict is not a normal part of human relationships? And why do we think that we should come pre-wired to handle conflict efficiently? Conflict skills are learned and then must be practiced. Unfortunately most of us did not develop in homes where effective conflict skills were taught and practiced. An effective way to handle conflict is to learn the appropriate skills to handle conflict. However, when one finds oneself in the middle of conflict that is often not the time to try to tackle the job of learning new skills on your own. Then it is time to ask for assistance from someone who is trained in conflict resolution skills. More complex conflict situations, such as multiple parties, or long-time conflict issues also often need the assistance of a trained professional to assist in the resolution of the conflict.

Gateways Counselling has the expertise and experience of working with people to assist them to learn and develop conflict resolutions skills. We offer one-on-one training and workplace training in the development of conflict resolution skills. We also assist individuals, families, couples, and workplaces resolve conflict. We are experienced in assisting couples who are separating to develop mediated agreements that deal with property, separation, and issues relating to children.

Gateways Counselling utilizes the interest-based conflict mediation approach. This approach assists all parties in first telling their story. There has been research conducted on witnesses of crime that illustrates how different people experiencing the same event will have different perspectives. This results from how our brains filter and remember different bits of information. Thus different perspectives of the same event result. Therefore it is important in all conflict situations to assist the conflicted parties to tell their story. This is the first step to being “heard”.

The second step in the mediation process is reflecting to the other person what has been “heard”. This step assists in developing listening skills and ensuring that the other person really does “feel” that they have been heard. Often this step is missed between parties that are in conflict. Often people are too busy preparing their responses or figuring out what position that they will take that they do not take in or hear what other people are really saying. Assisting people to slow down in their processing and to learn that when they listen to another person that does not take away from their experience. People may feel if they acknowledge another person’s position that makes that person right and them wrong. It does not. All this does is acknowledge another person’s point of view. By doing so states that this point of view is different than the one they hold. There is no need to feel threatened if another person has a different story. However, people often feel threatened, but that is because they have not learned the skills of detachment and acknowledgment of another point of view. One thing to learn is that because another person holds another point of view, even about ourselves, does not have to make it true for us, but for some reason it makes it true for that person. Getting curious about how they got to that point of view or why they feel it is important to hold that point of view is more important. In the conflict resolution process space is created to begin to develop deeper levels of understanding about why a person holds a certain position and what it is that they truly need.

Thus enters the third space in interest based mediation the definition of needs. Not many people understand that what they are truly trying to do in conflict is to get a need or needs met. These needs can be divided into three categories; substantive, psychological, and process needs. Substantive needs are often the easiest to understand as they are concrete. These are needs to do with money, property, or perhaps some type of benefit, i.e. holiday time. Psychological needs are subjective needs such as needing to be heard, feeling understood, or expressing a disappointment or hurt. Process needs are the manner in which something was handled or occurred. A process need might be the need to be a part of a process or be a member of the decision making process. In the interest-based mediation process neither party gets their needs met over another persons needs. All needs are considered when deriving a solution.

Thus enters the fourth stage of the process; the solution generation stage. Too often people want to drive to solution too quickly. This again is due to the uncomfortable feelings that many people experience when dealing with conflict. The problem with rushing to find a solution to a conflict is that this solution is often not the best, does not meet all parties’ needs, and will not last. Taking time to generate all types of solutions and then to examine these solutions in light of how they meet all parties’ needs is the best process to find solutions to conflict. In the solution generation stage solutions are just generated, no matter how wild a solution is that solution goes on the board for potential solutions. Creative thinking and creative solution generation is stopped when parties attempt to analyze solutions at this point. Thus this stage is just for generating solutions.

The fifth stage is testing the solutions against the needs of all parties involved in the conflict. This stage allows time to think logically and constructively about how the solutions might work and to test them against any concerns. This is the stage where the best solutions are then decided upon and where the heart of the mediation agreement comes from.

The final stage is actually drafting the mediation agreement. The mediator prepares a draft of the mediation agreement. Then all parties examine the mediation agreement and when they are satisfied that it states what they have agreed upon, during mediation, they sign the mediation agreement. In the case of a separation agreement then each party must take the agreement to an independent lawyer for the preparation of a legal document.

The benefits to mediation is that the parties involved get an agreement that better suits their needs and more accurately represents their individual desires. Mediated agreements are often more effective as the parties themselves are involved in the process. Another benefit is the reduced costs, in either court costs, business costs, i.e. reduction in sick time and/or better workplace relations, or a reduced cost in the emotional upheaval that people experience in unresolved conflict.

Especially in this time when diversity is being experienced in so many different manners it is important for people to become aware of how conflict develops and to ensure they have skill sets to move through conflict more appropriately. Age, education, experience, sexual preference, race, religious expression, male/female, and different experiences in life, are just a few ways in which diversity is expressed. Ensuring that you and/or your team, family or business is prepared to handle diversity is important. If Gateways Counseling can assist you in either preparing a mediation agreement or delivering some training please contact us. Gateways Counselling is a member of Conflict Resolution Saskatchewan and can be found on their website.

Fees for one hour mediation services are $100.00 per hour plus GST for individuals and couples and $150.00 plus GST for workplace mediations.

Training fees are dependent upon each individual project and a cost estimate can be provided by contacting Gateways Counselling.

Organizational Diagnosis:

Judy has specialized training in “Organizational Diagnosis: Building Commitment for Intentional Change’ from Sam Kaner. This workshop provided solid training in the core competencies of diagnosis: Contracting Skills; Diagnostic Inquiry; Diagnostic Reasoning/Organizational Analysis; and Feedback Design, and Delivery and Facilitation. This process is unique in that it has a solid diagnostic piece that assists corporations and business units discovering what the true underlying issues are. This process funnels into the issues in a manner that allows a clear diagnostic picture to surface. The diagnosis is then followed up with a fact finding presentation to the appropriate parties. This process in conjunction with many other corporate workshops that she has both taken and delivered provides Judy with a strong background to assist corporations to facilitate meaningful change.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy Certification Courses Powerful Tools for Personal Empowerment

What is NLP?

Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP is a field of knowledge that began to develop in the mid 70’s with John Bandler and Richard Grinder. They started the field of NLP by modeling individuals that facilitated change such as Fritz Perls (creator of gestalt therapy), Virginia Satir (family systems therapist), and Milton Erickson, M.D. (physician and hypnotherapist). Neuro-Linguistic Programming was interested in how people create and hold their realities and how those realities could be changed. NLP focuses on how the brain understands or interprets reality, whether that is through pictures, sounds, feelings, or thoughts and words. This reality, although individually created, is acted on by the individual as if it is real. Therefore beliefs or attitudes that we carry at one time in life often become locked in and continue to direct our understanding of the world. So if one time I thought that I could not play the piano, I will continue to act on that belief. I will act on that believe even though I may now have the skill sets and ability to learn to play the piano, I will continue to sabotage myself so that I continue to uphold the belief that I cannot play the piano. This is a type of denial. What I believe of myself I will continue to recreate for myself, unless I can let myself out of the pre-ordained prison that I hold myself in. NLP can be utilized to loosen that model and to change those disempowering thoughts and beliefs.

Many different techniques that are applicable to communication, business, and personal development have been developed and continue to be developed. NLP training sessions sprung up all over the United States and into Europe and other countries. People began to use the techniques of NLP and found that they assisted change. That change came much faster than the fifteen years that was required for traditional psychotherapy. Since the 1970’s there has been an explosion of books, trainers, and different techniques that have been developed for personal development, business, health, and education. practitioners and trainers.

How does my brain work and what can I do to create change?

For the past twenty years I have taught NLP to small groups. I have utilized NLP effectively in my counselling practice. NLP can be used to assist people in understanding how they have created their patterns that create their current realities. NLP can then be used to effectively shift those limiting patterns to create realities that are more balanced, filled with choice, and support personal effectiveness.

The brain is a powerful learning machine that learns. It learns useful patterns and un-useful patterns. Repetition of thought and behavior anchor in these patterns. These patterns of thought and behavior filter through every part of our lives. Often we are unaware of how deeply imbedded these patterns are and how perversely they filter into our lives. Just by thinking of something we continue to anchor in these ways. NLP can help you first to become aware of these patterns and then to begin to shift them. NLP is not a magic wand, but is an effective system of thought and tools that assist change.

NLP is both one of my favorite bodies of knowledge and one of my favorite systems of tools for change. I like the fact that NLP helps people to create self awareness and helps people to understand how their minds have created the realities that they are in. Then the tools from NLP provide doorways to build understanding and change.

NLP has often been called the framework through which to understand perception. NLP tools and strategies help to create more personal choice. This choice is built through powerful NLP change work, hypnotherapy techniques, understanding the structure of language and using that structure to facilitate change, create metaphors to facilitate learning and growth, free the unconscious mind of limiting patterns and beliefs, communication skills for business and personal relationships, effective goal setting techniques and much, much more.

You can recapture your personal power and if you choose, help others to do the same.

In the hypnosis training the ability to work with the unconscious mind deepens. You will learn specific language patterns, how to understand and elicit feedback from the unconscious mind, different types of inductions, the levels of consciousness and hypnosis, development of metaphors, direct and indirect methods of communicating with the unconscious mind, and other techniques such as conscious/unconscious communication. You will also learn specific patterns such as stop smoking and weight loss processes. The NLP and Hypnosis Teaching Methods

Information is taught to your conscious and unconscious mind utilizing NLP and Accelerated Learning techniques. This means that information is delivered to you utilizing many modalities, written, visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. You will also receive prior to the training information for you to review that will assist you in understanding and incorporating the material from the class. There are also small breakout sessions, which you are required to participate in, to discuss and practice the skills that you have learned. These breakout sessions are guided by handpicked qualified assistants. The information and practice is constructed in a manner that allows you to learn the material and apply it immediately into real life situations. Each weekend participants experience their own personal breakthroughs that translate effectively into their lives. You will walk away from the first weekend already utilizing powerful personal transformation techniques. The journey continues from there, with each weekend powerfully building on the skills from the previous weekend. You have the commitment from our trainers that this material is applicable and usable in everyday situations to powerfully transform your life and the lives of others.

The only person that can change is us. This is true of any situation in life where the ability to create impact and change is with us. We may feel controlled by the situation. We do not understand our own motives and feel manipulated by situations or the people in our lives. Frequently we do not have the tools or strategies to rise above the situations that life presents to us. These techniques will help to give you power and choice over the only person in the world you need that with, you! Who better do you need to get to know and understand, but self? Meditation techniques teach people to center, to become aware, and to step into a position of observer, so that you can detach from emotions and events of the world. NLP is a model that gives you that ability to begin to observe and begin to change.

Unbridled -Set Yourself Free

Most of us move along through life operating in a manner that never really connects us to our true potential and authenticity. We often interact with ourselves and others in ways that we create facades or places of hiding that rarely let us or others see who we truly are.

Carl Rogers was a famous humanistic psychologist who encouraged people to uncover their authenticity and in that process connect with “ peak experiences” in our lives. True authenticity means that we are fully in the present moment, breathing, feeling, and coming from a place where this is it; I am in the moment and I am more fully aware of everything that is going on inside of me. I am aware of my external world, I am embracing it and stepping up to the plate of now, with all my resources fully engaged and therefore more able to truly interact and benefit from that moment; whatever that moment is.

“Peak experiences” are those moments of pure flow, pure abandonment in the moment where you feel fully connected, fully alive and fully engaged. Your heart and mind are open. How much different would your world be if you were more fully able to be in the present and fully utilize your thinking and emotions in a productive and positive way? How often have you felt like someone else or something else was running your life? How often have you felt less than engaged in your life, with your loved ones or at work? What if you could find a way to be more present, be more authentic and have more connection and passion with self and others.

Horses are powerful teachers and as a result can assist you in not only being more present, being more congruent, but also in obtaining more effective boundaries, communication and authenticity in life.  Horse are in the “now”, read your body language faster than any bio-feedback mechanism and provide “living metaphors” to learn and grow from. When teamed with highly trained professionals, both horse and psychology professionals, these teachers can lead you to powerful change in a fun and supportive way.

Cain Quam and Judy Wright have joined together to offer you the opportunity to learn in a fun, enthusiastic and supportive environment.
